Amana has been making refrigerators since 1947. That’s quite a track record for any company, but you don’t get to make refrigerators that long unless you’re doing something correctly. Refrigerators isn’t all Amana makes. They also make ovens, dishwashers, washers/dryers etc. Amana has been bought up a few times since it first started making refrigerators, and is now owned by Whirlpool. Mysteriously, however, Whirlpool’s quality consistently outperforms Amana’s. Below is a sampling of the products they have available.

This is the best refrigerator in terms of all around features and appeal. It is one of Amana’s most spacious refrigerator, most of the shelving is adjustable, and easy to clean in the event of a spill. It has an external dispenser for water and ice. This refrigerator actually is one of the few Amana models that currently does this. Additionally it presents itself really nice unless you’re looking for a cabinet-depth/counter-depth style. Of course, this could be counter/cabinet-depth if you try hard enough.
Some customers complained about the water not being cool enough during dispensing. Those were the earlier models. the sides are black and not stainless steel. The shelving is a bit thin as well, which can sometimes lead to breakages. Overall though, this is a customer favorite. |

This is one of those “it’s an awesome product but . . .” sort of products. French door refrigerators, at first, seem like the ideal style for a refrigerator. You can put an entire pizza box in there if you want. The doors don’t open as wide as a single-door fridge. In theory it should be more energy efficient since the freezer is on the bottom. There’s a lot to love about this particular model. There are a couple of nagging issues. Some customers report problems with build quality, but only a few. The dispenser is inside, so every time you want to get a glass of water, you need to wait for it to finish filling to close the fridge. Probably a waste of energy. After a while, we just got frustrated and cut a huge hole in the center of the door so we could reach through (I lied, no we didn’t do that).
Some customers have complained about the placement of the filter inside the fridge as well versus outside. We like it better inside, because the outside ones tend to be rather tricky to deal with sometimes. Also there is an order to closing the doors, which can be tricky for people who aren’t aware of this. It doesn’t always close well either. Still customers rave about the design and features of this fridge. |

In terms of build quality, Amana has a reputation with this style of fridge, to be sort of middle-of-the-pack. They’re not the worst, but not the best either. Good news is that the top scores are all pretty close together, so it’s likely that you’ll get similar quality compared to models that are rated higher. This product is really good for smaller kitchens, and customers that use it for that purpose seem to get a lot out of it. Despite it’s smaller size, it still manages to be 18 cu/ft. It does handle crisper/meat drawer temperature levels as expected. |
